Behind the Scenes
The process began with in-depth conversations with creator, Belinda Jombwe, about character, setting, and context. Belinda served as a cultural consultant throughout, guiding everything from prop sourcing to set dressing to ensure authenticity. I did lots of research, made mood boards, illustrated concept art and made lots and lots of notes as part of the process.
The project offered fantastic opportunities for playful, eclectic design: a cluttered farmhouse, a kitschy country shop stocked with everything from garden gnomes to detergent, and an all-pink baby shower.
Transforming Grace’s bedroom with design assistants, Eleanor Stranieri-L’Estrange and Aurora Rymaszewski was a highlight— we captured 2000s nostalgia with lava lamps, posters and a sticker-covered vanity. One standout prop was a diamanté-covered "Drama Queen" piggy bank that quickly became a crew favourite.
